Massive open online courses for students

About online courses

Massive open online courses (MOOC) as an educational format emerged in the early 2010s and today form an important part of life of many people all over the world, striving for new knowledge and self-development.

In 2014, TSU relied on development of own online courses, resulting in our first MOOC “Sketches of Siberia. The city of Tomsk” – a course for studying Russian as a foreign language, oriented to make the listeners familiar with the history and cultural heritage of Tomsk.

Today, the online course portfolio of TSU includes more than 100 MOOCs hosted by various educational platforms, such as Coursera or Stepik, and the number of listeners of our MOOCs has exceeded 1 million. A team of specialists from the Online Course Development and Support Center of TSU Institute of Distance Education performs the full cycle of MOOC production, including support, promotion and research in the sphere of online learning. Jointly with experts, we will help the online course developers to implement their most interesting ideas.

TSU annually develops more than 10 online courses in collaboration with the best teachers of the university and external experts. Since 2021, the Institute of Distance Education has also created online Master’s degree programs.

TSU MOOCs rewarded at the EdCrunch Award annual international contest:

  • Training under an education program

Online courses are already included in some Master’s and bachelor’s degree programs of TSU. For example, Survival History and Technology (life safety) or Leadership and Teambuilding. An online course can be integrated partially or in full, substituting a discipline. In the second case, the course is re-credited, if, upon its completion, the students have received a verified certificate, having undergone a proctoring procedure.

  • Proctoring

The pandemic showed that the education system is also in need of innovations, modernization, and technologies that enable the transition to the online format. The proctoring system has become one of the solutions.

Proctoring is a system of control during the online exam/testing. Control is carried out by a proctor who is an administrator overseeing the process through a webcam.

Online proctoring enables confirmation of the student identity, eliminate cheat sheets and help a teacher to assess the knowledge objectively.

TSU has used synchronous proctoring by means of the Examus program since 2017. In 2020, the use of proctoring became necessary and more massively used. An exam with proctoring is the only alternative of an intramural exam, ensuring transparency and quality of the procedure. The experience of proctoring use is standard in the world practice, and, in this case, TSU keeps up with the time, using advanced technologies in education.
